Changing high schools during the academic year<\/strong> is a decision that can stem from a wide variety of reasons.<\/p>

Some students may realize that their chosen track does not suit their aptitudes; others may need to relocate to a different city with their families; and some, while satisfied with their current course of study, may simply wish to attend a different institution. At times, relationships with classmates or teachers may have become difficult, or the school\u2019s organization may no longer meet a student\u2019s specific needs.
The first point I clarify for families I meet at the Pascal high schools is that changing schools and changing one\u2019s course of study (track) are two different things.<\/p>

A student in the second year of a *liceo scientifico* (scientific high school) might choose to move to another *liceo scientifico*, remaining within the same academic track. A different situation arises when a student wishes to switch for example, from a *liceo scientifico* to a *liceo linguistico* (linguistic high school), or from a technical institute to a *liceo*. In such cases, some subjects will differ, and it is necessary to determine what knowledge the student needs to catch up on.<\/p>

Current regulations clearly distinguish between these scenarios. Article 1, paragraph 7, of Legislative Decree 226\/2005 as amended by Decree-Law 127\/2025 and subsequently enacted into Law 164\/2025 stipulates that during the first two years of high school, students may request a change of track by January 31st without the need for supplementary exams. The receiving school conducts an orientation interview and organizes the necessary educational support to bring the student\u2019s academic preparation up to the required level.<\/p>

From the third year onwards<\/strong>, however, changing one\u2019s course of study requires passing a supplementary exam<\/strong>, which must be taken after the final grading period but before the start of the new academic year.
Conversely, if a student wishes to change schools while remaining in the same course of study, there is no single, nationwide deadline set by the Ministry. A transfer can also be requested during the school year, subject to the availability of a spot and the issuance of a formal release (*nulla osta*) from the student\u2019s current school. Requests made late in the academic year require careful consideration regarding the reasons for the move and the need for educational continuity.<\/p>

Beyond the formal regulations, however, there is also the matter of common sense. In my view, when a transfer can be planned in advance, it is best to complete it by March or, at the very latest, April. Joining a new class in May leaves very little time to get to know the teachers, adapt to their assessment methods, and tackle final exams. Naturally, there may be exceptional circumstances such as a family\u2019s sudden relocation that necessitate different arrangements.
This is important information, as I often encounter parents who believe that a student must wait until September or even repeat a year to change their educational path.<\/p>

Then there are students who have no desire to change their course of study; they simply wish to continue the path they have already chosen, just at a different school.
Take the case of \"Marco\" (a pseudonym) a student who joined the Pascal school during his second year of *liceo*, having transferred from another state-run institution in the area.
Marco is a highly talented swimmer. He trains consistently, competes in events, and dedicates a significant portion of his day to his sport. He is also an excellent student serious and determined.
At his previous school, there was a protocol in place for student-athletes, but by his account it was never actually put into practice.<\/p>

This is a problem I am well familiar with<\/strong>. A protocol may exist on paper, but if teachers fail to coordinate exam schedules, overlook the student\u2019s competition commitments, or neglect to arrange for the recovery of missed lessons, the document is of little practical use.
Marco wasn\u2019t asking for higher grades or an easier curriculum. He simply wanted to be able to pursue his studies with dedication, without constantly having to choose between the swimming pool and the classroom.<\/p>

I believe these young people deserve a great deal of attention<\/strong>. Those who participate in sports at a high level already understand the meaning of discipline, hard work, and perseverance. Schools should help them organize their commitments, rather than forcing them to give up one activity for the sake of the other.
The same naturally applies to students who are seriously dedicated to music, dance, or other artistic pursuits. Tailoring an educational path does not mean abandoning academic goals; rather, it means finding a sustainable structure that remains in compliance with school regulations.<\/p>

Another story I recall is that of Irene again, a pseudonym.
Irene arrived at the Pascal school to enroll in the fourth year of the *liceo delle scienze umane* (human sciences high school). She came from a rather complicated academic background, having previously \"made up\" a lost school year at an institution that specializes in such programs.<\/p>

At a certain point, however, she realized that the preparation she had received was not sufficiently solid. She had caught up in terms of time, but she felt she had significant gaps in her knowledge. She also understood that those gaps would inevitably surface especially with the *Esame di Stato* (state final exam) on the horizon.
Her decision to change schools struck me because she wasn\u2019t looking for an easier path. On the contrary, she chose to take on a more demanding academic journey to ensure she would be adequately prepared for her final exams.<\/p>

I want to be very clear on this point<\/strong>.
\"Making up\" a lost school year is an option provided for by the educational system and can be a valid solution in certain situations. However, catching up on a year does not mean one can simply forgo the knowledge that the year was supposed to provide.
I always advise families to choose standard educational paths at state or *paritarie* (government-recognized private) schools, while carefully verifying the nature of the institution and the quality of the curriculum offered. A center that merely prepares students for exams is not automatically a *paritaria* school.<\/p>

I am wary of promises that seem too easy<\/strong>. When a student is told that they can shorten their academic path without any real difficulty, that they will hardly need to study, and that the final exam will be little more than a formality that is the moment to pause and reflect.
You cannot build a solid foundation of knowledge without effort. This does not mean ignoring the difficulties a student may be facing; rather, it means truly helping them identifying their gaps, planning for the recovery of specific subjects, and monitoring their progress over time.<\/p>

When we welcome a student from another school especially if they come from a different academic track or have followed an unconventional educational path it is important to me to reconstruct exactly what they have studied. Simply looking at a report card is not enough; one must compare curricula, talk to the student, and determine which skills they have already mastered and which ones still need to be strengthened.
Of course, not all transfers stem from situations like those of Marco and Irene. A family might move to a different city for work, or a student might feel uncomfortable within their class group or struggle in their relationship with certain teachers. Before making a decision, it is appropriate to consult with the student\u2019s previous school, though a resolution cannot always be reached.<\/p>

I do not believe an adolescent should feel compelled to remain in an environment that prevents them from studying with peace of mind until they reach their final year. Changing schools provided there are concrete reasons for doing so is an option that deserves to be considered without prejudice.
High school guides students toward a significant milestone: graduation. Yet, a diploma should not merely be a finish line to be reached as quickly as possible.<\/p>

I would like every student to finish high school having acquired a solid body of knowledge and effective study habits, and possessing the ability to make an informed choice about their future whether that involves university, a vocational path, or some other educational experience.
Marco wanted to continue swimming at a high level without compromising his performance as a good student. Irene wanted to reach graduation knowing that she was truly well-prepared.
These are two very different requests, but both deserve to be heard.<\/p>

To families considering a transfer, I offer this piece of advice: do not rely solely on information gathered over the phone or on the promises made by a school. Request an in-person meeting, visit the institution with your child, and ask for details regarding the curriculum, how any academic gaps are addressed, and how the teaching is organized in practice. If possible, ask for the student to spend a day in the new classroom; it is important for him to get to know the environment where he might spend the next few years.<\/p>

Above all, listen to his reasons. Sometimes, as adults, we worry about change and fear that a transfer might disrupt a path already underway. But young people grow, develop new interests, and come to better understand their own capabilities. A choice made at thirteen does not necessarily have to dictate one\u2019s entire educational journey leading up to graduation.
Do not look for the school that promises the least amount of effort, but rather one that will support your child with seriousness, attentiveness, and expectations well-suited to his potential.<\/p>

After all, the goal is not merely to obtain a diploma, but to finish high school with a solid foundation and, most importantly, the confidence needed to face whatever comes next.<\/p>
