From September Cambridge Lower Secondary Curriculum
The Cambridge Lower Secondary Curriculum for middle school offers an educational path that integrates the Italian ministerial program, focusing on subjects such as English, Art and Technology, and Global Perspective with an interdisciplinary approach.
AN INTERNATIONAL REALITY
Foreign language learning is a fundamental skill for students at Holden International Middle School. From the first year, students study English as their first language, with Spanish and Chinese as their second and third languages, and receive the relevant Cambridge, DELE, and Confucius certifications.
We believe that foreign language proficiency is essential for those who will become adults in an increasingly multicultural and interconnected future.
Holden International Middle School has joined the Erasmus+ international mobility project for student and teacher mobility.

English L1- English as a First Language
The curriculum is designed for students from diverse international backgrounds, with the aim of adapting to their new environment and fostering intercultural understanding. Through this program, students develop native-like English proficiency. It begins with Cambridge Primary, providing a solid foundation for the next cycle.
English L2- English as a Second Language
The course is designed for Italian primary school students and offers a gradual set of learning objectives for those learning English as a second language. The objectives are aligned with the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Art and Technology
The Art & Technology program in middle schools aims to develop students' artistic expression through critical thinking and cultural awareness. Students participate in painting workshops, sculpture workshops using recycled materials, drawing and illustration courses, and photography projects. Collaborative activities, such as murals and art installations, promote teamwork on local issues.
The program includes sessions with guest artists and in-depth studies on art history, allowing students to research artistic movements and influential artists. This diverse approach helps build artistic identities, analytical skills, and a broader understanding of the role of art in society, preparing students for future creative journeys
Global Perspectives
The course is designed to strengthen fundamental skills such as research, analysis, evaluation, reflection, collaboration, and communication. It aims to integrate the various disciplines of the Cambridge curriculum. Students are encouraged to address important social issues, stimulating discussion and expanding their critical thinking and awareness of global dynamics. This fosters the development of interdisciplinary skills, providing a strategic advantage for future studies.
Spanish as a Second Curricular Language
Studying Spanish as a second language is crucial, particularly with regard to oral proficiency. Acquiring verbal communication skills allows students to express themselves fluently and confidently in a variety of contexts, facilitating interaction with native speakers and cultural exchange.
Practical activities, such as role-playing, dialogues, and presentations, encourage active use of the language, fostering dynamic and engaging learning that enhances everyday communication. Furthermore, students have the opportunity to earn recognized Spanish language certifications, helping to validate their language skills and enhance their personal CVs.
Chinese as a third language
The approach to teaching Chinese as a third language is based on a communicative and immersive methodology, developed in collaboration with the Confucius Institute. This method is designed to foster practical language skills and in-depth cultural understanding.
The curriculum includes interactive activities, role-playing games, and collaborative projects, creating a stimulating learning environment. Furthermore, particular emphasis is placed on pronunciation, writing, and listening comprehension, preparing students to earn internationally recognized certifications.
ONE SCHOOL, ONE METHOD
We have adopted a teaching system that follows the principles of Finnish education, because we believe it is essential to foster an education based on freedom rather than obedience, developing a sense of responsibility and individual and collective respect.
Our educational system is therefore dedicated to developing children in every aspect, from social to emotional skills, through the promotion of collaboration and mutual solidarity. The goal is to learn to work together on the We, not the I.

A 360° SCHOOL

The core of our teaching program is a gradual approach to developing transversal skills, supported by strengthening critical reflection, writing, and language development. This is achieved through afternoon workshops alternating with study-focused learning modules.
Within the Italian curriculum, one hour per week is dedicated to the study of philosophy, a fundamental tool for developing critical thinking, ethical reflection, and intellectual curiosity.
The Holden International Middle School also plays a key role for students involved in competitive sports, offering targeted academic support through organized study time and teacher flexibility regarding time off for sports competitions or special training sessions.
Holden International Middle School stands out for its educational offering, which integrates global characteristics and a balanced approach to learning. Students from international backgrounds and Italian students spend many hours in a multicultural environment, where small class sizes and afternoon drop-offs are designed to optimize homework.
This model allows students to focus on homework and lessons during both curricular and extracurricular time, promoting effective time management. Furthermore, in line with international educational institutions, free time is valued, encouraging sports and recreational activities that foster interaction between different cultures.
PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO DIGITAL SKILLS
To ensure that every student can naturally learn the technological skills needed to develop their digital citizenship, we have equipped our classrooms with PCs and multimedia tools, accustoming students to controlled and supervised use.
RESPECT FOR THE UNIQUENESS OF THE PERSON
Our primary goal is to raise children in a peaceful, healthy, and welcoming school environment, where honesty, tolerance, responsibility, and individual autonomy are at the heart of not only academic but also ethical and human development.

QUALITY TEACHING FOR EVERYONE
We carefully monitor each student, understanding their learning pace and style to ensure they achieve the best possible learning experience with peace of mind and satisfaction. At Holden International Middle School, we have based our teaching method on three essential pillars:
- each student is unique and different, and requires a personalized learning path;
- differences must be valued, and on this assumption we base our principle of equity;
- The maximum possible learning for each individual is guaranteed by training offers aimed at this purpose.
Inclusive teaching is, therefore, an educational approach where linguistic and cultural differences do not constitute obstacles but rather transform themselves into a common goal aimed at sharing.
A STIMULATING ENVIRONMENT
As part of the Shared School project, established through a Sharing Agreement with the Municipality of Chieri, students annually participate in the "Lezioni in libreria" workshop (lessons open to the public at the Torre bookstore), interact with local associations supporting Alzheimer's patients, and present musical fairy tales to children in Chieri's preschools.
Students participate in a monthly cultural outing in the area. A three-day field trip is organized in March.
